,000 rockets in to israel since last wednesday. president obama has been working with world leaders to diffuse the crisis. fox's david lee miller is live in southern israel with the latest on the conflict. david? >> reporter: at this hour, top ministry in israel are meeting behind closed doors to discuss a post-cease-fire agreement. as they continue to talk, the bloodshed continues. in the past if hours, israel continued to attack sites in gazsites ingaza. in total they targeted 1400 sites. among them, a stadium, a sports stadium where the israelis said hamas militants were launching rockets to israel. among the other targets, the media center where they say the militants were using communications facilities to get in touch with people on the ground. in total, more than 100 palestinians have been killed. half of them civilians. among them 1 11 civilians. all of them from the same family. most women and children killed from a single airstrike over the weekend. israel says the strike was the result of targeting the home of a rocket mastermind who was working for the militants. meanwhile, the mil

the conventional wisdom here in washington is that president obama is sort of in the driver's seat with these negotiations. that being said, i think that there's a good deal of pressure on both sides here. if, indeed, we go over the fiscal cliff, there are a number of things that republicans are tremendously concerned about, not the least of which is the tax increases, the expiration of the payroll tax holiday, capital gains tax increase. there are a number of things frightening republicans right now, there's a number of things that should truly be frightening democrats. democrats control the white house, they have a larger majority in the senate. there is certainly some onus on president obama, the white house and senate majority leader harry reid to show that the democratic party can govern in a moment of great fiscal crisis. so i think there's a tremendous amount of pressure to go around here. while the conventional wisdom is that the president is in the driver's seat, i think that there's plenty of leverage to be had on capitol hill. jon: and republicans are not likely going to

that president obama was able to capitalize with women, was able to capitalize with hispanics, with other people who may have felt alien meanted? >> you define yourself. ronald reagan ran as a pro-life candidate. but, again, he defined a certain agenda. he set what is positive things on out there. if you don't, the other side will do it for you. so they got away with war on women and the idea that gm was a choice between liquidation and reorganization xhrks is wasn reorganization, which is wasn't. romney had a good plan that would have saved tax players $30 billion. >> so you don't think the platform of the party will be fundamentally a different platform? >> you don't have to change the fundamentals of your principle. of you have to learn to get the message out there. for example, when romney announced paul ryan, you notice the background, all white. why? that's just stupid if you're trying to reach out to voters. same thing at the convention -- >> you blame it solely on on the candidate himself not -- >> and the party. the candidate and the campaign and some of our senatorial candidates got it

months ago saying after george mitchell, the obama administration's special envoy for israeli/palestinian peace negotiations, after he ended his tour without any success at all. that's been more than a year ago. maybe a year and a half or so ago. i said they need -- really, they need someone who's got clout with the israelis. who's got clout with the palestinians in the arab world. i thought bill clinton, especially with his wife leaving as secretary of state, maybe that would be a good assignment for him. he's taken on other assignments like haiti relief, for example, the tsunami. i know he got -- the final months of his presidency to a deal between the israelis and the palestinians. i think mccain may be on to something. i don't know if bill clinton would want to do it. i've asked him that question in an interview i did with him a few months back. he didn't say no. he didn't say yes. but i think they need someone of that caliber to -- assuming that they achieve a cease-fire and that there's no great guarantee that they will, let's say they do, they need to follow up quickly

in egypt. so that's where i think everybody would like to see it head. obama has worked hard to talk to them to try to steer it in that direction. will that happen? >> the most phones call that secretary clinton has made from the road have been to her counter-part in egypt. and they have been very clear that egypt has a relationship, they have the credibility and influence in the region to push hamas to stop the attacks. now, there is also a fair amount of funding being held up in washington right now that the egyptians need very immediately. remember, they weren't just one of the top recipients of foreign aid. they have a funding crisis. they have literally been to the point where they have had problems paying bills. so there is some immediate leverage to gets them to act immediately. whether that ends up being effective or not is another question. >> schieffer: well, do we think the administration-- obviously, i would guess they're advising the israelis not to invade. but what beyond that are they trying to do? is this an opening to start a-- the peace process to get it started aga
